Remapping (Chip Tuning, Chipping, Mapping, Superchipping, etc) is simply re-programming your Engine Control Unit (ECU) to be more efficient within the conditions of use in the UK, such as climate and fuel grade. The side effect of this extra efficiency is more power and torque! Further tweaking of various parameters such as throttle response, fuel delivery can create a much more driveable vehicle whilst increasing fuel economy (though that depends on your right foot!).

In a word, Yes! Since you are modifying your vehicle which could cause you to drive faster and have an accident, your insurance company want you to tell them. In reality, unless your accident involved death, they are unlikely to know your car has been tuned and are unlikely to investigate.

New MOT rules are more stringent with regard to EGR and DPF systems, failing vehicles that have had these removed. However, they do not and cannot check to see if your car has been remapped

A warranty claim can be void if a modification done to the vehicle is proven to be the cause. However, a professional remap is undetectable and would unlikely be the cause of failures. The only concern with newer vehicles still under warranty is if software updates are performed by the manufacturer during a service which would overwrite the ECU and effectively remove the remap. In most cases the remap can be re-installed for a small fee.

A Remap is customized and coded to that vehicle and therefore cannot be transferred. A new remap would have to be purchased for the new vehicle.
